The Harlem Hellfighters on the road – a gallery that shows the regiment in full dress array, and images of the band as they arrive in Brest and travel through France, performing in Paris and elsewhere under the direction of James Reese Europe – as well as famously marching through no man’s land playing the Memphis Blues (listen to them play the same piece in the “Moaning Trombone” section). The two closing images of Europe’s small ensembles reflect the range of activity of an artist at the forefront of the emergence of an African American music that was to make a worldwide impact.
